The beauty of the outdoors for babies and toddlers

Most of us are aware as kids get older that, they need space to run, spread out, and have fun outdoors, but what about when children are smaller or less mobile? Even older kids can receive more benefits than simply running off energy, but what are those additional benefits, and how do they support babies and toddlers specifically?

  1. Sunshine and fresh air help improve sleep patterns and quality of rest; we all know babies need their naps. Getting out in the sun in the morning helps develop a healthy circadian rhythm, which is the body's internal clock. Establishing appropriate sleep patterns is key to development.

  2. Gross and fine motor skills get a boost through outdoor stimulation. Children and babies don't have to travel far to experience the textures, temperature, and landscape of the outdoors. Moving slowly over uneven ground and picking up fallen tree seeds can captivate children for long periods and aid their development.

  3. Building a community with other humans, plants, and insects is also wonderful. Even if your child is at the stage of primarily parallel play, they're still observing and learning from those around them, which will eventually lead to relationships. All communal play is helpful.

Spending time in nature is genuinely advantageous at every age.
