Experiencing nature is good for just about everyone right now, especially children! While we continue to confront the unique circumstances of our present time, Upper Manhattan Forest Kids (UMFK) has adapted our program to the virtual space and even added a few new pieces.
The UMFK program has always been grounded in culture and history as we base our work on the distinguished lineage of Danish forest school. Now more than ever we see the importance of fortifying our young leaders with a more holistic vision of their environment. While we always prioritize free play and imaginative exploration we are also adding on some ideas about the interdependence between human beings and the natural world as well as the importance of traditional environmental knowledge.
Outdoor education is grounded in the belief that children naturally learn about themselves and the world around them through nature. and that This adapted approach to our program in the virtual space we will offer opportunities for children to explore their outdoor environment close to home using whatever safe locations you have accessible to you. Therefore, whether you have a window, a nearby public park where you can adhere to safe distances or wilderness in your back yard, you should be able to make the assignments work for you!.
Wherever you are at, and whatever you are ready for, we have programs to support you and your children being connected to nature.
How It Works:
· We will start as a group via video,
· A brief inquiry-based instructional lesson using age-appropriate terms to consider the world around them and key concepts about environmental justice
· Fun outdoor Challenges and Missions will be assigned to assist in the exploration of the days topic within their surrounding environment.
· We will rejoin on video 20 minutes before the end of class to share our findings and thoughts before closing.
